References about questionable alternative notation

$\mathbf{x} = \begin{bmatrix} x_1 \; x_2 \; \dots \; x_m \end{bmatrix} \qquad \mathbf{x}^{\rm T} = \begin{bmatrix} x_1, x_2, \dots, x_m \end{bmatrix}$

Are we sure that this (IMO questionable) alternative notation is conventionally used in some context? What context? Please give references. The history page shows that the text about alternative notation was inserted by an anonymous newbie (164.107.166.97)
