Request[edit]

Dear colleagues! It is machine translation of my article into English language. Request to finish off it in accordance with the English spelling. Thank you. Mazepa11 (talk) 09:11, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Interesting article! Wi2g 17:58, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The decision was not to move. RainCity471report my errorslist of failures 18:06, 9 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a perticular reason why the page title is Cossack Research Center but in the lead the article calls it the Hetman Mazepa Cossack Research Center? RainCity471report my errorslist of failures 21:25, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it was moved in 2010 to a simpler title. I support a move to Mazepa Cossack Research Center, since "Hetman" is a title and not a name. The article's sources are not the greatest, and there's no real guidance about the name. All the best, Miniapolis 00:22, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The rule at WP is to use short distinctive names when possible. The name here follows the earlier soviet-era convention of naming all institutions after some distinguished person. The current name is correct: the Russian and Ukrainian names read Scientific research center of the Cossacks, named after Hetman Mazepa. In other words, a research center for Cossack history and culture , named after the most famous Cossack ruler. In normal English usages, the name of the honoree is rarely used: e.g, the Московский государственный университет имени М. В. Ломоносова (Moskóvskiy gosudárstvennyy universitét ímeni M. V. Lomonósova, Moscow State University named in honor of M V Lomonsov is called in WP the same name that is generally used in English, Moscow State University. Even for English names, the official name of Stanford University is Leland Stanford Junior University This applies to all forms of institution names, even if not named after a person: Columbia University is officially Columbia University in the City of New York, but it's used only on their letterhead and diplomas.
If there were many Cossack Research Centers, then it would need to be Mazepa Cossack Research Center. DGG ( talk ) 05:01, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
After reading DGG"s comments (the editor who made the original change), I agree that we should stay with the current name and follow the Moscow State University example cited. If and when disambiguation is needed, we can use Mazapa's surname or his full name (without "Hetman", an honorific). All the best, Miniapolis 15:33, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to you both for replying. After reading your comments I agree that it should stay at this name. I'll probably change the bit in bold to match this.
I knew absolutely nothing about Ukrainian naming culture, so I just thought that the article should be moved to the more specific name in the lead without knowing how it all worked. I didn't even know that Hetman was a title! Thanks, RainCity471report my errorslist of failures 17:58, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
