Replacing a defective CIV D37 computer with new.[edit]

I was an E-Labian during the late '70, early '80 at the 341st Strategic Missile Wing, Malmstrom AFB MT., and have personally R&R'd (removed and replaced) defective Codes Vault: Code Inserter Verifier D37 computers, on at least three (3) occasions. With another qualified PRP member, we ran CIV-Cert on so many occasions that I submitted TO (tech-order) change requests to resolve discrepancies between the TO and obvious issues between the TO and what needed to happen to complete CIV-CERT. Most related to the MTU (big box, Magnetic Tape Unit), an instrument that was fairly new at the time. Wow--Mag Tape!

The 'basic' process: 1) Verify D37 computer fault in CIV by running CIV-CERT. Or accept the direction of the Codes Vault commander who may report unusual D37 behavior. 2) Remove a D37 computer from a new NS20 CAN. 3) Remove the defective CIV D37 computer. 4) Replace CIV D37 with new. 5) Run CIV-CERT.

One Captain (O-3), an Academy Graduate I recall, warned me about the Hexavalent-Chromium coolant used on the CIV's D37. At that point in my life, I was unaware of HexChrom genetic problems, but heeded the Captain's advice and used hand protection etc...Now at 60+ years and two (2) successful independent children, off my payroll, I don't think I experienced any Hex-Chrom issues.

CIV-CERT was the #1 most feared task by members of the c1980 316x2G/H (Electronics Lab) career fields.
