you guys might want to double check this. Oakely, Kenrick, and Hancock have all suggested that Didicoy is a term for a half-breed of mixed Romani-Gadje blood. just a quick FYI.

Didikoi is not a Romani word for a non-romani blooded traveller

I am from a Romani family in the UK and I speak the language.

Didikai (didikoi etc) is a word for a person of part Romani blood.

Old songs I have grown up with like "Usher bye my didikai your father gone to tudor rai" - quiet mix blood, your fathers gone to prison.

or "I'm the Romano Rai, I'm an old Didikai" - I'm the Romani lord, I'm an old mix blood

are songs with reference to mix bloods. It was very strict law within a romani family and in some families it still is for a Romani child to marry someone of Romani blood. Marrying non-Romane was a caste-outable offence.

The English Romani word for a traveller of non-Romani blood is a Pikey. (this word may have a non-Romani origin but amongst Romani families this is definetely what it means).

This is why Roms would say "They're not Romani, they're pikies" or "That's an old pikey trick that is".

In addition to the above posters examples of Romani writers such as Oakely, Kenrick, and Hancock who also say didikai means mix blood, the famous Romani writer Manfri Frederick Wood also confirms my knowledge of my language I was raised with and that it means someone of mixed Romani blood.

Fellow British Gypsy - I was raised with the word for a half-and-half being posh-and-posh or poshrat; Not sure which is the more polite word. Pretty sure I've heard didakoi further south too though, so they're probably both right, and language is flexible Hachiwichi (talk) 23:02, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
