All sources I've found contain major contradictions concerning the circumstances of the construction of the first light, compounded by some major differences as to what the various photographs depict. They all agree on the following: an 1870 appropriation, construction beginning in 1872, and first light in 1874. The problem with this, as hinted by Kraig Anderson's background material, is that in 1870 there was no ship canal; and indeed the injunction intended to block its construction wasn't granted until July 1871, about ten weeks after the diggers broke through to the lake. Therefore it's hard to see how the appropriation could have been for a light for the canal. The only way I could make sense of this is to conclude that (again, following some of Anderson's narrative) the light was initially intended for one of the docks that preceded the canal, but was re-sited to the canal's breakwater when construction actually began. At any rate, I don't feel I can repeat their narrative as they give it. Mangoe (talk) 15:04, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
