Actually, it is hard to find out the exact starting date of farmers suicide. According to one of the leading Journalist P Sainath “Farmers' suicides in remote parts of the country have a way of appearing in and disappearing from our national media and national consciousness.

The Orissa govt. records show 3,509 farmers committed suicide in the last 11 years. However, the year 2009 was dreadful for most of the farmers in western Orissa. Do you think I should put 2009? It is also happening in other states viz. Karnataka, Andhra pradesh, Maharastra, and Bundelkhand. Also there are report that Farmers sell wives to pay debts in rural India. I believe this article may be acceptable within Wiki as a separate but linked article, once it can be written in more neutral language and with verifiable sources.
