Date of birth[edit]

George J. Austin's date of birth on his tombstone and death certificate is 1881, but many other dates are used including 1887. It was not uncommon for people to make themselves older in order to enlist in the military during this time period (as far as I can tell the Spanish-American War was his first military experience).
