Klaatu/Gort relationship[edit]

I surmise that normally, Gort is in charge. However, programmers of the police may have included "First Contact" conditions which place one of their humanoids in a position to restrain the police robots when the humanoid judges it appropriate.

Thus, Klaatu is a "special deputy" and Gort is under program orders to follow Klaatu's orders. When Gort becomes aware that Klaatu has died, his normal programming engages until given (by anyone, apparently) the override "Klaatu barada nikto".

What this means? Unknown, but Gort stopped destroying humans (possibly reverting to only destroying their weapons), rescued Klaatu's body and brought it back to try to revive. GBC 18:31, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2008 film[edit]

Due to the upcoming release of the 2008 I am requesting someone add a segment about Gort's appearence in this upcoming film. An Error occured in my attempt to add this is which an odd image completely different then the one I uploaded was placed along with the my complete summary of Gort in 2008, so that's why I'm not doing it myself.Ergna (talk) 02:08, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Selection[edit]

IMO the upper body image with visor down is unique and should be kept. IMO added 2008 remake images are both significant. – Conrad T. Pino (talk) 06:32, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free image count debate[edit]

This article began as the 1951 Gort performance alone and 3 of the 4 images illustrate unique aspects of that performance which are difficult to describe in text (full body shot with face indistinct, full closed visor face shot and full open visor firing beam weapon face shot; these are all irreplacable images). The 4th image is a publicity still for the future 2008 Gort performance. IMO it's more likely than not the performances will differ sufficiently to warrant an article split. I suggest postponing image deletes until after the 2008 performance is evaluated and described. – Conrad T. Pino (talk) 06:52, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have four images of two versions of the character when it can be argued that one will suffice: text can be used to describe the opening of the visor; the shot of Gort's upper chest and head is already covered by the long shot; and there currently is no real critical commentary to accompany the still of the 2008 version. Rather than removing a well placed template, perhaps you should consider which of the images are really necessary for the article. -- Molotron 08:20, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Let me offer a couple of suggestions. First, I agree that at present the article is a bit heavily laden with non-free imagery. If we have good sources for a more detailed discussion of the robot's appearance and capabilities which the images would illustrate, then the claim of fair use would be stronger. Second, I'd rather see the article improved directly by those who see things that can be corrected and for discussion to take place on the talk page than to see a nag-banner headlining the article. --Dystopos (talk) 14:47, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid I'm not a fan of the idea of hiding the problem. The article should at the least remain in Category:Articles with improper non-free content from November 2008 until its image issues are resolved. -- Molotron 15:07, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First, I did NOT place the 4th image covering 2008 characterization in this article; however I'm willing to tolerate it since a future article split may take place and recovering from a hasty delete is harder than leaving the image in place to prevent its loss. Second, favoring imprecise text over judiciously chosen images is counter productive (single picture is worth a thousand words). Third, the decision is inherently a value judgement and therefore subjective requiring discussion to determine is consenus exists. Fourth, I deem adding the non-free tag capricious and inappropriate since no discussion accompanitied the addition. Fifth, the "well placed template" assertion is NOT justified per the template usage description and is therefore NOT well placed and is removed once again. – I support keeping three 1951 images. I will not revert removal of the 2008 image.Conrad T. Pino (talk) 09:29, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If it pleases you, I will upload a PD image of Gort firing his laser from the trailer. However, there is nothing worthy of the close-up with his visor on. Alientraveller (talk) 23:43, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There's no such thing as a PD image from a commercial film trailer. --Dystopos (talk) 17:40, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article 1951/2008 split debate[edit]

Regretably mixing images from the 1951 and 2008 performances is confusing rather than enlightening. An article split in about a month seems the more prudent course. – Conrad T. Pino (talk) 12:38, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. We can easily adapt the article to discuss more than one depiction of the same character. --Dystopos (talk) 17:38, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, let's start by adapting this article to keep 1951 and 2008 performances as distinct from each other. – Conrad T. Pino (talk) 00:48, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is this really correct?[edit]

The article says "In this rendition, Gort is composed of a vast swarm of "nanomachines" or "nano bugs", miniscule insect-like devices that self-replicate through the cunsumption of metal and are capable of disintegrating any substance they touch."

There is a huge difference between being made or, and turning into, a swarm og nano bugs. Before he is broken down into the swam, he is rock solid. The change is triggered by something. 80.202.40.85 (talk) 00:38, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's fiction, remember? It's triggered by a stage direction in the script. 09:31, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Gort or GORT?[edit]

(I posted this proposal on the remake's discussion page as well)

In the new version, GORT is an acronym. So should all references to the new version be typed in all caps, and all references to the original version be "big G; little o-r-t"? If so, I'd include a note along the lines of "or GORT" in the opening of this article. Please discuss/approve/oppose below. - SoSaysChappy (talk) 11:25, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Both – In the 1951 performance Gort is a name and NOT an acronym. IMO the 1951 performance will likely remain more notable. I suggest using both forms; each use consistent with the referenced performance and using "Gort" when referring to the character seperately from either performance. – Conrad T. Pino (talk) 05:09, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gnut[edit]

Shouldn't there be some mention on the "Gort" (named Gnut) in the original short story that gave the basis of The Day the Earth Stood Still —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.188.149.134 (talk) 17:22, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

--I'm adding a section regarding the description of the original Gnut from the short story. Please review it and decide if it's worth keeping.

GORT (2008) Does Speak[edit]

In the 2008 film, Gort does speak. He says, "Klaatu barada nikto" in a highly modulated, very loud voice during his first appearance. 24.80.226.228 (talk) 06:25, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That line has been spoken by Klaatu, not Gort. --Stilgar (talk) 20:39, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

nano-robots[edit]

the article says: "minuscule insect-like devices that self-replicate through the consumption of metal and are capable of disintegrating any substance they touch."

But in the film, as far as i remember, the bugs "eat" a diamond drill to multiply. That make me tought they can reproduce themselvs by deintegrating any material and transforming. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.11.81.235 (talk) 17:01, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cylon Raider[edit]

Perhaps a link can be made to Cylon_Raider in the see also section. It's relevant as it has a very similar appearance (although it's not a humanoid robot).
