Untitled[edit]

There is contradictory information as to whether Greece participated in these Games. The IPC says there was a Greek delegation at the Games, but also that no Greek athletes took part (see also here and here). I can't find any source actually attesting to Greece's participation. This Wikipedia article claims that Greece entered an athlete (unnamed) in alpine skiing, but no source is provided, and I can't find one anywhere. Checking the other language versions of the article, the Norwegian, Polish and Ukrainian Wikipedias say that the athlete was Ioannis Vlachos. But they provide no verifiable source, and they don't provide his results at these Games. The IPC's records indicate that Vlachos competed only in 2002, not in 2006. On the balance of evidence, it seems that Greece did not compete in 2006. Perhaps they meant to, and then withdrew. Perhaps they sent only officials rather than athletes - or perhaps they sent no-one at all. But in any case, there doesn't seem to be any record of any Greek athlete actually entering an event. The IPC lists Ioannis Vlachos (1965-2009) as a 2006 flagbearer, and he does carry the Greek flag at the opening ceremony on March 10, which can be seen at Paralympic Sport TV. He has a profile on the Official Torino 2006 website (archive), where it says he will compete in the men's Slalom - Sitting , and the men's Giant Slalom - Sitting, in alpine skiing. However, he is not mentioned in the 2006 site's start lists and results. So yes, there doesn't seem to be any record of Greek athletes actually entering an event. Wonder what happened between the opening ceremony and the events. Bib (talk) 10:45, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
