2016 comments[edit]

Soon after adding a set of beautiful photos to this page which I took on many, many visits to GFS, I was notified by Commons that they were all copy-write infringements. I argued on the deletions talk page, but they were soon all deleted. I looked into it and it does seem that in the USA a photo of a sculpture in a non-public area is problematic. (What an idiotic legal system!) That being the case, I do not understand why any sculpture photos remain in Commons. They seemed to pick on mine! But, since some are still available, I used a few of the remaining ones to improve the page again. I hope these stick. Looked awful having an art museum page without any pictures! Seems unfair. Your photos should be kept if you took them properly without any BLP issues. I don't think Grounds for Sculpture qualifies as a private area since it is open to the public for viewing (although a fee is charged). People can even see the sculptures from outside the grounds so in a real sense it is a public place, and there are many precedents for being able to photograph public sculptures and include those photos in Commons. So I think your photos should be kept. Is there a link to your photos on Commons so I may argue for their inclusion?--Tomwsulcer (talk) 01:33, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for the support but they have already been deleted from commons. So... the park is quite large and you really can't see most of the ones that I photographed from the outside (but one was) - and as you said they do charge admission so maybe that's the problem. But I will never understand why the pictures of the same sculptures that are still in Commons are still there. RobP (talk) 02:56, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've tried to understand the many, often conflicting, guidelines about photos in Commons, and my sense is that even administrators there don't always have a clear idea of what is allowed and what isn't. And then what happens in Commons itself is determined what happens in the wider legal world of copyright laws and such, so in many respects it is an ongoing mishmash. All I can say is that if, in future, you have photos you think should go there, and they're put up for deletion, please let me know, and I can help argue that they stay.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 11:13, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
