Phalanx[edit]

Didn't Harold Macmillan (himself a Grenadier captain) once say that the Guards Division in WW1 was the finest fighting unit since the Macedonian phalanx? Politician's hyperbole of course, but might make an interesting addition if anybody can remember when and where.Paulturtle (talk) 23:52, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting tibbet from the Times article[edit]

"In the Guards Armoured Division the tradition of the old Guards Division of the first world war was maintained."[1] EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 03:51, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

To note, forming 2nd line territorial divisions were given leeway on what identity to acquire during the Second World War. The Guards Armoured Division's history seems to the suggest the same for them on p. 17 and on p.157 it notes "a Guards Division" and not 'the Guards Division'.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 03:59, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
