Well, as her brother the king had no son, his sisters was in fact his heirs, as female succession had ben allowed in the constitution of 1604, wich made Christina queen. As is oldest sister, Hedvig Sofia was in fact his heir, and after the birth of her son, he became third in line after her. You are perfectly right, however, that this was never in any way officiall or formall, and that Ulrika Eleonora was elected after some dispute. Newertheless, Ulrika Eleonora was elected because female succession was in fact allowed in Sweden before her, and after many had considered Hedvigs son, the heir to her rights. One could therefor say, that although Hedvig Sofia never had the title Crown-princess, nor had her rights to the throne formally aknowledged, she was in reality the heir because of Swedish law!
