Wrong information ?[edit]

The article says that : "on 5 May 1905 he [Bahýľ] flew up using his petrol-engine helicopter to a height of four meters for over 1500 meters. His attempt was also recorded by the International Airship Organizement Corpis."

However, a French science mag (Science & Vie, January 2008, n°1084, p. 7) answered a reader asking why they didn't mention Jan Bahyl in one of their article. In this answer, they state that according to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale and the books they checked, Paul Cornu is really the first man to have flown with a helicopter (albeit it is contested, with Louis Breguet's gyroplane piloted by Volumard the 29 september 1907, but is it an helicopter, that's the question...). They also state that the first recognized record of distance for a heavier-than-air aircraft was in 1906 with Alberto Santos-Dumont who flew over 220meters, with a plane. So Bahyl flying 1500m in 1905 is suspicious at the very least. I have to add that they mentioned this information about Bahyl is only present on wikipedia.

Does someone have sources ? If not, I will remove the quoted part from the article.

Agreed, that Bahyl most likely did not fly a manned helicopter. On the other hand, the French magazine would not have been able to determine through popular references, or even the FAI records, whether or not Bahyl created a model that may have flown.
There is a reference for Bahyl having constructed some sort of craft at Helis.com. The edit occurred sometime between 26 March and 7 November 2006.[1] The information on the Helis.com page, and this wikipedia article's original version (5 December 2004), bears similarities to a webpage which was first archived by Archive.org on 18 November 2003.[2]
Also, a German economics book[3] from 2001 references Bahyl as a Slovakian inventor. Unfortunately, the publisher only allows a snippet view on Google books, and the viewable content in question only includes helicopter in parentheses after his name, although describes him as an inventor. So it appears that the information actually predates inclusion in Wikipedia.
It is likely that the technology for internal combustion engines was sufficient that a model could've been powered by such an engine in 1905, but certainly not a full-scale, manned aircraft. That he is not recorded as a significant contributor to helicopter technology by any of the european references suggests that there is some historical misunderstanding, one way or another, of what actually transpired. --Born2flie (talk) 17:12, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is a reference, directly in this article, stating it. (http://www.indprop.gov.sk/?jan-bahyl-zivotopis) It is a page belonging to Industrial Property Office of the Slovak Republic. I think the information should be returned. It should not have been removed as there is a reference here all the time. May be marked as contested by other sources, but it should be included. Direct quote from the source: "5. mája 1905 sa vynálezca Ján Bahýľ na svojom stroji vzniesol v Bratislave do výšky 4 metrov a preletel 1500 m". Translation: On May 5th 1905, the inventor Jan Bahyl flew up on his machine to the altitude 4 meters and flew 1500 meters. 109.74.154.79 (talk) 13:39, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
