Untitled[edit]

Jack Harker passed away April 27, 2013. I created this page as a record of his remarkable achievements. Contributions and updates welcomed, but please raise any issues or concerns here so they can be addressed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnha (talkcontribs)

Notability[edit]

I removed the newpage tag as there is simply can be no doubt of the significance of Jack Harker to the storage industry. FWIW, I never worked with or for Jack at IBM or elsewhere, but have observed his many contributions over the years but u don't have to take my word for it, since both IBM and the IEEE have recognized his contributions. It would help if you could add a link to an obituary or a news article about his death. This would show that he is notable--Racklever (talk) 17:29, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As soon as one is published it will be done. Tom94022 (talk) 17:43, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Blue box[edit]

Can someone change the blue box to be a thick blue border? Robert.Harker (talk) 01:00, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It would be great to have an IBM blue box but I can't figure out how to make bold white letters so maybe a cornsilk box with a wide border will do. Tom94022 (talk) 17:39, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Have cleaned up a few formatting problems (most of them just minor syntax glitches) and moved the quote box into the main text, see WP:LEAD and WP:WEIGHT. A very nice article, please let me know if any of the changes are unclear. GermanJoe (talk) 15:07, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all your efforts, but I fail to understand your burying the quote box at the bottom of the history section. As I read WP:LEAD and WP:WEIGHT it seems to me the lede is the appropriate place; it summarizes his career in his own words and anything but undue. I'll wait to hear what u have to say before I invoke revert. Tom94022 (talk) 16:06, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Tom94022, a lead should be an impartial succinct summary of a topic. Checking other biographical articles, quotations like this are usually not put in the lead to avoid a possibly biased introduction into a topic. It would be better to add more factual details in the lead to summarize his influence and achievements (the lead is a bit short on such information) and keep the quote where it is as background information of his personal thoughts. An article - and the lead - should not describe a topic from his own point of view. GermanJoe (talk) 18:36, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that the quote is an impartial summary of the significant part of the article. It is a reasonable summary of the impartial obituary; just because Harker stated it himself doesn't make it biased. I could restate the obituary into something like the quote, but why bother? If u have any evidence of bias or partiality then it would be inappropriate, but in the absence it should be suitable. Likewise, in this unusual case of having a very relevant autobiographical summary the usual format of biographical articles is not very relevant. What is relevant as stated in WP:LEAD is the lede should, among other things, "summarize the most important points" which is what the quote does. I am going to re-position the quote in the History section pending further discussion Tom94022 (talk) 21:52, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I still think, the quote gets a bit too much prominence, but the new placement is an improvement as compromise. Thank you. GermanJoe (talk) 23:38, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
