Possible expansion[edit]

I had intended to just write a short stub, but a little googling found enough to expand it into a classic tale of late Victorian Liberalism: rags-to-riches followed by political success as an adherent of the Radicals, followed by paternalist philanthropy and the inevitable knighthood. In fact, it almost looks like a parody :(

I haven't expanded it as much as I could, because my main source was a very long (and now out-of-copyright) his obituary in the local newspaper, the Rochdale Observer, and ownership structures in those days were such that local papers were not exactly independent (he owned other papers, so the Observer may even have been one of his). The obituary descends into outright hagiography, and skates over what must have been quite a hostile relationship with the Co-operative, and doesn't mention a few prosecutions for food standards problems which I found glimpses of when a "james+duckworth"+rochdale google search picked up a few subscription-only sites (e.g. here).

If anyone has more reliable sources (such as national newspapers), I'm sure that a lot more could be done to lick this into shape. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs)

Disambiguation[edit]

This page should be a disambiguation. The polish article connected is a tennis player, and the Australian Open links to this person. That is incorrect. Edoderoo (talk) 13:28, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
