Date of birth[edit]

His bio on his website [1] say he's 52, but this article said he was born 24 November 1952. Did mental arithmetic slip, or is his bio out of date? -Splash - tk 17:34, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

His Labour Party biography has Born 24.11.52, Glasgow. --Cavrdg 19:23, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's interesting. I've removed it again, though, (the anon is me logged out) as I'm inclined to regard his personal biographical site as more likely to be right. Even some speculation causes contradiction: clearly it is up to date as of at least the 2005 election results, and so he still can't have been born in 1952 even if we suppose his age has not gotten updated there. On the other hand, the Party's website ought to know its stuff from paperwork etc. Until we can be certain of this, it should stay removed. I'll see if I can get an email response from their website, but it'll have to be of the kind that actaully updates the site, since I can't just cite a reply from them (WP:NOR etc). -Splash - tk 20:49, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd go with the Labour link, politicans only update their websites at election time and aren't actually known for keeping them upto date, so it's very likely his bio is out of date. Catchpole 21:05, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It won't do to speculate in the face of conflicting information from authoritative sources elsewhere, though. It is not for Wikipedia to pronounce on the 'truth' of one version over another, and the media frequently lambasts the project for it. Until the differences are settled (I've emailed the webmaster, in hope) we really cannot include the date of birth here. Note that the BBC has opted to report him as being 52 also. We must not speculate. It is not a critical piece of information in the immediate sense; it can wait re-appearing until we know for sure. -Splash - tk 21:14, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
