Manchester United[edit]

According to Manchester United's museum curator, whom I spoke to via email this morning, Jimmy Porter was brought in to the club as a scout in September 1938, and had become involved in coaching the players by that December. However, there is no mention of him in club records after the 1938-39 season, so I'm not sure where the Telegraph got the idea that Porter was club manager until 1944. Regardless, while Porter may have had coaching responsibilities at United, the job of selecting the team was predominantly Walter Crickmer's - he had already held the same position before (April 1931 - June 1932) and would do so again both before and after the alleged appointment of Porter. Considering Scott Duncan was barely responsible for the coaching aspect of the club, it wouldn't make sense to say Porter took over from Duncan as manager when Porter's background was almost entirely in coaching. – PeeJay 13:42, 5 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
