Cartoon[edit]

Chinaman or Confucius[edit]

I'm "Confuced". Do these refer to the same depiction, or is the latter a more benign version of the former? Clarityfiend (talk) 18:34, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They are two slightly different characters, and you're right that the article wasn't very clear about this. Nast drew both characters at various times; I've done some rewriting to clarify that he didn't invent John Chinaman, who was already a familiar figure by the time Nast started publishing his work.
