Donation?[edit]

a private collector .... donated it to the State Historical Museum. The complete donation, which cost the museum "millions of dollars"....

Surely if the museum paid for it, it can't be considered a donation? 86.155.207.81 (talk) 17:34, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I thought the same thing as well, but the Forbes article states "The egg itself was recently donated by a private, unnamed owner to the Russian National Museum." It might just be a terminology thing for museums to refer to all contributions as "donations". --Hemlock Martinis (talk) 17:59, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It didn't make sense to me either. I was bold and changed "donated" to "sold" and "donation" to "purchase". — Kpalion(talk) 21:48, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This wasn't a good move, readers and books often capitalize plant names. In ictu oculi (talk) 10:53, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Where the egg was sent[edit]

An editor wrote this in the body of the article, right after "The egg remained in the palace until it was looted in the wake of the October Revolution later that year." I'm moving it here.

This last sentence is troubling: Grand Duke Michael had two properties in Russia, a villa in Gatchina and his country estate at Brassovo. His visit to Brassovo at Christmas 1916 was his last and he lived at Gatchina until he was arrested on March 7th 1918 and sent into internal exile in Perm. He was murdered there on the night of 13th June 1918. While it is possible that the egg was sent to Brassovo and then forgotten it seems unlikely, given that he was known to be living in Gathina. If you were intent on delivering anything to the Grand Duke you would naturally send it to Gatchina. Furthermore, his wife, Countess Brassova, continued to live at Gatchina until about September or October 1918. Had the egg been within her control she would, it is suggested, have recognised its value and taken it with her on her escape to Britain. Her daughter’s account of their life in exile make no mention of it.

I don't have an opinion on the matter. I marked it as disputed in the article. Herostratus (talk) 03:41, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
