maiestas in the Late Republic[edit]

I don't know much about Roman law per se, but in the 1st century BC, a number of men who had just completed a magistracy were brought before the maiestas tribunal for which members of the equestrian order sat as judges. These charges were often politically motivated, or brought for personal revenge. The point is, the charges were not connected to military service, as the article says.
