Criteria[edit]

The criteria of .700 and 120 games was selected in order to make a list that was neither too short or too long. Increase the games played # to 130 or 140 and you get even fewer teams. Lower the winning % to .667 and the list balloons to over 40 teams. Vidor 08:08, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, probably. I found a page on baseball-library.com which mentioned that only 8 or 9 teams have ever won 108 games in a year. Unfortunately, i can't find the page anymore, so i can't get a citation.76.252.29.31 (talk) 01:33, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To handle the game count in a more gradual and robust way, an invariant measure should be sought out - such as the chi-squared statistic. Discussed under the chi-squared article is Lancaster's measure χ = (m - Np)/√(Npq) which, here, corresponds to p = ½ = q for a .500 record, over N games played and m wins. In a sport without ties (or where ties count as games no played, as they did in the NFL before the 1970's), that's equivalent to χ = (Wins - Losses)/√Games. With that measure you no longer need arbitrary "magic numbers" for cut-offs and can include all won-loss records irrespective of the number of games played. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.29.226.169 (talk) 01:59, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Move[edit]

This article needs to get moved. I don't think it's a question of *if*, but rather to where. First and foremost, the MLB abbreviation should be dropped in favor of the full name. That being said, here is what i suggest: "List of Major League Baseball team seasons with a winning percentage above .700". Thoughts??? While long, it is accurate and provides a more "finite" way of defining the goal of the article. //Tecmobowl 14:48, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Thy will be done, Oh Lord of Baseball. However, this article is a companion to the similar-named List of worst MLB season records. You need to come up with a uniform naming convention... or, possibly, combine the articles as a "Best and Worst..." Baseball Bugs 14:53, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
