A manuscript in Paris, France chronicles the transition from Pictand to Scotland. A BBC Scotland documentary special on the history of Scotland (Episode 1 - the last of the free):

shows that Kenneth MacAlpin was King of the Picts. Period. There was no treason by MacAlpin. Rather, it was a matter that his youngest son and successor Aed, a regent weakened by Viking conquests, was usurped by a Gael named Giric through a coup d'etat and who sent MacAlpin's grandsons Donald II and Constantine II of Scotland to Ireland where they became assimilated into Gaelic culture. As you can see, there was no genocide of the Picts. Rather, the modern day Scottish are descendents of Scots and Picts but their culture derives mostly from the Scots. DNA tests have shown that the Scottish are the group which most resembles the Irish but the resemblance is not complete:

The difference can be attributed in part to Pictish ancestry. BTW, genocide is not the best method to wipe out a culture. Unless it is complete, the survivors will cling to their culture ever more strongly.
