Which Marshall Field is this? III? IV? His son was Marshall Field II and his grandson was Marshall Field III (who was the president of Field Enterprise, Inc. which published the Chicago Sun Times and the World Book Encyclopedia), so to answer your question he was the first notable Marshall Field

Exposure to cold weather causes pneumonia?

[edit]

Please. Propagating an old wives tale about playing golf on New Year's Eve causing his death is just sad. Unless one of the others in his golfing party also had/developed pneumonia, he did not catch it in this golf outing: much more likely that he caught it in a confined indoor space due to close proximity with someone who had it -- definitely not outdoors.

It doesn't actually say that the cold weather caused pneumonia, but does sort of imply it. I have cited a source for this. The same implication is in the source. Kendall-K1 (talk) 16:44, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Omission of Marshal Field's extensive Chicago landholdings

[edit]

There is no mention of Marshal Field's extensive Chicago landholdings. It was this, and not his dry goods business, that made Fields one of the wealthiest men in the U.S. at the time. See Gustavus Myers, "History of the Great American Fortunes" (1910).

In addition, this omission is at variance with the Wiki on the University of Chicago, where it is mentioned that the UoC was founded in part by land donations by Field.
