Etymology[edit]

The article doesn't explain why it's called the mashed potato. I guess it's a reference to the foot mashing motion (perhaps it should have been called the bug squish), but a formal source would be good to have. Lupine Proletariat 12:34, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The problem may be that the article concentrates entirely upon the steps. The mashed spud bit came via the hand and arm movements. One arm held an imaginary mixing bowl to the side of the dancer's hips and an equally imaginary wooden spoon was waved aloft using the other arm, and was then used to simulate the movement of mixing in the mixing bowl in the manner before the days of electrical kitchen gadgets (or much to do in one's spare time!) There is an Atlantic/Stax LP on the sleeve of which the routine is pictorially illustrated. It might be Wilson Pickett or Chris Kenner, I forget. The dance was a pretty poor second to the hully gully in my opinion.Coxparra (talk) 14:46, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It would be really important for posterity, if not the future of mankind itself, if someone would please explain whether the Mashed Potato and the later Monster Mash led to the later "Total Mash" then generic term "mash" which seems to have morphed by pronunciation into "mosh" and thence the term "mosh pit." I find the following entry highly suspect for multiple reasons and suggest it should be removed: Duh.
