MMA record[edit]

Changed wins from 15 to 7. Often the UFC inflates win numbers of their fighters, and often includes amateur fights. Sherdog lists 11 fights of his with a record of 7-4. Unless another source citing 8 more fights can be shared, I think it should remain at 7-4. Thesaddestday 06:10, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

can you cite souces of UFC inflating numbers. And why not include Amateur fights? Are they any less rough, usually more so. Sometime the only difference between 'amateur' and 'professional' fights is the budget of the promoter as in no fighting difference, sometimes. You could say his UFC record is such and such but to disregard his other fights because 'Often the UFC inflates win numbers...' If you do it here shouldn't you not got through each and every UFC fighter and do the same? --Xiahou 02:59, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

there is actually a huge difference between amateur and professional... the only fights that should be considered are professional fights, and leaving the record to reflect his pro career is the most responsible thing we can do here... that argument aside, several sites such as sherdog and other fight finders list the actual fights giving you a tangible basis of what they have won and lost. if you can source his other pro fights then by all means do, but amateur should not be included Thesaddestday 09:22, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I can see both sides though. UFC who he works for says one thing and other sites say another. Would not the official site be more credible? Should we not put 'professional'MMA record with each entry then? Since its not a true representation? --Xiahou 01:49, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    I added this idea the the MMA project page--Xiahou 02:05, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

example of incorrect record used by UFC: Chris Price is listed by the UFC as 8-0, but in reality in his 8 fight career he is 7-1, losing his most recent fight Thesaddestday 05:43, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Amateur fights or not you can't just edit those out. The UFC officially lists his current record at 16-4 so that's what I'm changing it to.

I hate to say it but we must go with the UFC here. We have to trust that they have evidence of the extra fights that Sherdog (and other sources) simply do not have access to. It would however be a good idea to list both his "Official Record: 16-4" and his "Professional Record: 7-1" just so that everyone knows the distinction. Stat is wrong on GSP[edit]

He won by TKO. Why does it say UD? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.169.129.220 (talk) 02:50, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of external link[edit]

I removed an external link that was just a Q&A/interview with Matt Serra. Sure it could have great information, but instead of "spamming" the interview in the links section, it would be better to improve the encyclopedic entry and use the article as a reference. Nick Serra[edit]

Does anyone think that Nick should have a WP page? If not for his mma fights then for his training? (MgTurtle 23:50, 20 March 2007 (UTC)).[reply]

I vote Yes. Takedashingen620

Validity of BJJ information[edit]

The information I have gathered from the International Brazilian JiuJitsu Federation's website indicates that Matt finished 3rd in 1999 in the brown belt division, not first. Here is a link http://www.ibjjf.org/results/1999mundial.htm. I am uncertain how to handle this becuase in numerous interviews Matt has indicated he won mundials that year. (pauljr1121 23:50, 09 April 2007 (UTC))

I would say correct the article to be in line with the best reference that we have so far: http://www.ibjjf.org/results/1999mundial.htm. Sancho 00:12, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Matt Serra placed 3rd in the 1999 world championships.
It's interesting that they include this medal in their profile.
In the past, it was very complex to reach this level. Sergiosdsj (talk) 15:27, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also on the IBJJF website, there is no record of Matt Serra winning the 1999 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Pan American Championship. In fact he didn't even place (or compete?). http://ibjjf.org/results/1999panamericano.htm

Please revise this information —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.252.60.123 (talk) 00:02, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The best thing to do here would be to list (with reference) his official position. Then, if a source can be found showing Serra saying that he won, ADD that (with reference). No reference should mean no good here. Floodo1 (talk) 07:13, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Contradictory material[edit]

"He began practicing martial arts at an early age, first studying kung fu." <--Intro paragraph

"At the age of eleven, Matt was enrolled in a local karate school and by thirteen, Matt decided that karate would be his vocation." <-- Life and Career

This is completely contradictory. Anyone with knowledge care to decipher this and clean the article up a bit? Tuckdogg 01:40, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How's it contradictory? The two aren't mutually exclusive. east.718 at 02:06, 11/2/2007
The way it's written at the beginning, it appears he started in kung fu. Then later, it seems to say he enrolled in a karate school first, and that became his martial art of choice.
I don't know, maybe not contradictory, but not written well for sure. A lot of this stuff needs rewritten and properly cited. Maybe a candidate for a soon article improvement drive, since he's a UFC Champion and all...Tuckdogg 02:18, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Greg Kukuk?[edit]

The article mentions "In the 1990s, he began studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Renzo Gracie and on May 23, 2000 was awarded his black belt, the first American to do so under Gracie." But what about Craig Kukuk, with whom Renzo opened his first school in the US? I know there were some questions about his qualifications, but I'm pretty sure Renzo gave him a black belt. Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page[edit]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
