Somehow the numbering of the "Great Awakenings" in America has got itself all mixed up here. "New Lights" and "Old Lights" are "Second Great Awakening" terms. Old Lights are the folks from the First Great Awakening. Here at wikipedia we've somehow got the Second Great Awakening mixed up and called "The First Great Awakening". Well, how does this make any sense? There has to be a place where the old lights have their own legitimacy. In America/ aka the USA The First Great Awakening occured in the 1600s and I think perhaps involved the Mathers and the Cottons. Maybe Edwards was in there but I'm unsure of his dates, and I am very sure that the terms we're using here are Second Great Awakening terms. The Witch Craft Trials became The "Great American Scandal", and they were in some manner a part of the First Great Awakening. We got so heated up that they had to recall the Governor because he couldn't control the "disorder". We were accusing people of witchcraft simply because they refused to take off their hats when the judge walked past. However I'm not sure if this was the start or the end of it, and somehow all the stuff is off the web in 2007, but it was up on the web in the year 2000, so I'm gonna hafta go get some books out of storage before I can fix this mess. However, as to Sources for this just about any good American Colonial History Textbook from the earlier part of the last Century, or if you want to get scholarly here try the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia, which has the original papers of lots of those involved in the Second Great Awakening which occurred from c the late 1720s until perhaps maybe even as late as the 1750s. The only thing I'm really certain of about the First Great Awakening is that it contains the guy who baptised Benjamin Franklin.John5Russell3Finley 03:37, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
