Bold[edit]

Editors: yes, this article is different. It was conceived and written in the spirit of WP:Be bold, and attempts to illustrate what science can look like before it is tamed, trimmed, and neatly packaged. It necessarily must take a broad and even speculative view, because we (well, the scientists) do not yet know even what is relevant to the puzzle, and such "knowledge" as exists is inherently speculative. To some extent this article is about the development of scientific (geological) knowledge, and may thus be even more interesting and educational than a mere recital of dull, dry facts. Hopefully no one will get their shorts in a bind about this. And I thank everyone who resists the urge to jump right and start hacking away. - J. J. Johnson and others interested -- my shorts are just slightly twisted. I like the inviting approach to the reader and am not proposing any changes to the "Introduction to a puzzle" section. However the article is peppered with words that are specifically called out as tone problems in MOS:OPED (or in the same spirit): "interesting/ly" "notable/notably" and "curious/ly" each have more than five mentions. AWB "corrections" of duplicate references.[edit]

AWB editors: PLEASE DO NOT "CORRECT" the duplicate references. This article intentionally uses Harvard referencing, and the merging of references messes up the numbering of the notes. - J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 21:38, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
