There is only one hit for C. Frederick Ottoman, 1st Viscount of Ottoman, in a google search -- the text of which appears to be cut-and-pasted here. It is doubted that the ottoman was in invented in this manner.

Humpty[edit]

I made a blog post recently about the term humpty which is what we call an Ottoman in New Zealand, and whilst writing it discovered that the term is also used in Newfoundland. I tried to edit this page to add links to those, but the system warned that blog posts aren't usually accepted as references, so I didn't post it. Offensive?[edit]

Yes I find the word Ottoman offensive, as well as the sky falling on my head, kiwi fruit, nails, and any one who dilutes his/her brandy.

Not an Ottoman in the UK[edit]

In the UK we'd call this a pouffe - an Ottoman is a kind of backless sofa with either one or two ends for leaning on. They derive from the Roman dining couch and this is the authentic meaning.
