Name - considering addition: (astronomer)[edit]

Peter Nilsson is an extremely common name in Sweden, while Peter Nilson actually is somewhat rare, since there is no name "Nil" in Swedish. "Nilsson" can be considered a short version of "Nils+s+son", the first "Nils" is a name (short for Nicolaus), the second "s" is (of course) a genitive marker like in English, and "son" is Swedish for "son" (voilá!). By Swedish spelling rules, three consonants or more are always contracted to two, so "Nilsson" is the correct contraction of "Nils'es son". Nilson is however some demonstration of "uniqueness", by Swedish culture. But if there are other Peter Nilsons (a not too unlikely guess, since f.ex. Americans and others adher to their own spelling rules), we should consider moving this page to Peter Nilson (astronomer). Said: Rursus 12:20, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
