Denonym[edit]
There were no "British" ships for the pirates to intercept in the 17th century, since there was no British state yet. Prior to the first Act of Union in 1707, which created the Kingdom of Great Britain, no person or thing can really be referred to as 'British', since the concept did not yet exist.
