Cleanup April 2007[edit]

Template removal[edit]
The two templates {{essay|date=December 2012}} and {{technical|date=December 2012}} have been removed from the article. It seems the article was originally basically a copy/paste of the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica (such copy/pastes were quite common way back when) with wikification. As such, saying Please help improve it by rewriting it in an encyclopedic style. and This article may be too technical for most readers to understand. as the two templates stated seems a bit off. Yes, the article can be improved - mainly by modernizing some terminology and finding more modern references (assuming they exist - archaic usage), but the removed templates rather missed the point.
