Plot synopsis[edit]

This synopsis is extremely well written. Problem: it's too long in regards to "the rest of the article" (which hardly exists). But if the film is as important as it appears, then may the article grow to fit the synopsis.Hilarleo (talk) 19:08, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I cut down the plot significantly. Some of these cuts were due to too much description of things (this is supposed to be the plot, not the screenplay) and some of them were removing statements that were interpretations of the movie, rather than directly stated elements of the plot. I removed the plot tag, as the plot is no longer inordinately long, but it might still use another going-over by another set of eyes. Benjamid (talk) 03:04, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Undefined terms[edit]

I found a few undefined terms. Three seem to refer to Stock characters:
Texas Belle (Stock character?)- I thought it referred to a proprietary Beauty contest or these contest competitors, but I cant find an appropriate online def of this term.
"good-time girl" as Stock character means what exactly? It's not been defined, so it's problematic usage. Is Linda merely a Love interest? A 'part-time prostitute'? A "Hooker with a heart of gold"? Or something wholly different?
"Rope Torture" actually remains undefined. I referred the term to "Torture methods and devices" (section 6 of the general Torture article) which also refers to nonspecific, undefined torture uses of "rope".
Dab Hand
Party Girl (Stock character)- Actually Party Girl has a disambiguation page, but not an appropriate, general def. of the term in usage here.

These are all colorful funky Americanisms here. Though the synopsis could be/should be shorter, these terms are worthwhile (even crucial to informative, engaging writing)- but they require some amplification- & perhaps some sensitivity to gender as well. I feel they all ought to be defined by WP- at least certainly within the article that uses them (perhaps parenthetically, like this). Having just seen this movie, these aren't necessarily stock characters. Linda is a love interest, but she is of the "tomboy who is now attractive belle by day + bar waitress by night + has pretty much idolized Rane who has been missing + has complex about helping down on their luck guys + sexually aggressive." She's a rounded, semi-dynamic character in the literary sense. There's no specific evidence to show her as a party girl, other than the fact that she's willing to jump on Rane relatively quickly. If anything, that would seem to make her some sort of POW-hero groupie? (Fathers, lock up your McCain's?) I removed most of those terms as I believe they are ambiguous and also not necessarily founded in the movie. She is a 'Texas Belle' in the movie I think, during the presentation of the coins (it seems like some sort of ceremonial thing) so I retained that. Rope torture was also removed, as it just didn't seem like a big enough part of the movie to go into detail about. It's one instance out of many showing how he coped with his POW experiences. Minor errors fixed.[edit]

In my opinion this article is very poorly written. Tenses are mixed, non-encyclopedic terms are rampant, and there are many links to pages which do not exist. I have fixed a few errors, but am hesitant to act further at the moment as I fear I may be editing under the influence, and therefore liable to gross misjudgement. Please take into account my view of this article reflects on it before my editing. --86.3.95.152 (talk) 22:45, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The box office success of this movie listed in the article at $130 million seems very very high. Is there a reference for that? For comparison, The Godfather made 3 years earlier was the biggest box office success of all time at ~125$ million. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dylanesmo (talkcontribs) 03:35, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
