Technically, there are some things that are not always correct:

  1. the root window is not necessarily "as large as the screen"; if using Xnest, for example, the root window will be as large as the Xnest window; if using Xvfb, there may be no screen at all; saying that it is as large as the virtual screen would be correct but awkward;
  2. the root window is not always the background; in particular, if using a desktop background window, the root window will be totally covered by this other window.

However, at least in the introduction of the article, I think that making these two points precise is not a good idea, as that would complicate the definition of the root window. - Liberatore(T) 11:54, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
