Recording dates[edit]

@Mdeloia: Hello! A couple of years ago, you added the recording dates and venues for the songs, with this edit. What's your source for this information? I'm looking at the CD liner notes, and they list the venues, but not the dates. So for example, how do you know "China Cat Sunflower" and "I Know You Rider" were from May 23rd, and not the 24th, 25th, or 26th? Mudwater (Talk) 08:17, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Elephantranges and Mdeloia: Hello! I was getting ready to object to the recent removal of the recording dates from the track listing, here, when this discussion section reminded me that we don't have a reliable source for the dates. To say the same thing in a different way: Usually a numbered list is the preferred way to format a tack listing, but the use of a track listing template is justified in more complicated situations -- one of which, potentially, would be including the recording dates for the songs. But in this case, it's best to remove the recording dates entirely -- see my recent edit here -- unless we can find a reliable reference for them. They're not listed in the album liner notes, as I noted above. Mudwater (Talk) 11:23, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I cross-referenced the Steppin' Out with the Grateful Dead: England '72 notes from Europe '72: The Complete Recordings. For example, "China Cat Sunflower"/"I Know You Rider" in your comment is cited as from Steppin' Out here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe_%2772:_The_Complete_Recordings#Europe_'72,_Vol._19:_Lyceum_Theatre,_London,_England_(5/23/1972) Mdeloia (talk) 19:23, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Mudwater: yeah, and it’s a bit frustrating because you theoretically could just find the performances on the europe 72 box set on spotify and just match them to steppin out, but they probably want those dates to be sourced anyways… Elephantranges (talk) 21:49, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Mudwater: Hey, I'm listening to this album right now on Spotify and noticed the track titles each list the exact dates from which they come. Considering the metadata for tracks on Spotify are most often uploaded by the artist and/or their record label (at least that was my understanding), is there any way this info could be sourced so that we could include the recording dates here? Is it acceptable to cite spotify as a source in the same way liner notes for an album would be sourced? — Elephantranges (talk) 18:44, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Elephantranges: That's a good question. Yeah, I'm not sure. I wonder if they did get those dates from Grateful Dead Productions, or what. Probably they did, in which case they would be reliable, in my view. Mudwater (Talk) 21:25, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Mudwater: Scratch that – it only lists the dates for the tracks recorded May 7 for some odd reason. —Elephantranges (talk) 22:57, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
