[edit]Where did the title "Symmachus the Ebionite" come from? IIRC, he has always been referred to as just "Symmachus", & there is some evidence to show that he was Jewish, not in any way Christian (which "the Ebionite" would imply). -- llywrch 03:23, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
I believe that it comes from Eusebius, in Book 6, Chapter XVII of Church History: "As to these translators it should be stated that Symmachus was an Ebionite. But the heresy of the Ebionites, as it is called, asserts that Christ was the son of Joseph and Mary, considering him a mere man, and insists strongly on keeping the law in a Jewish manner, as we have seen already in this history."
