Well, no body has said anything... yet. This is a truly remarkable painting, but has a strange sense of censorship. In short, Venus has her breasts and other female parts (not getting too descriptive) showing out in the open. All the men in the picture are obscured by shadows or robes. But the women are not. The breasts of the women in the bottom left and bottom right are visible, along with the vagina (There, I said it) of the 'angel' up top.

Similarities to "The Nymphaeum"

This is a painting by Bouguereau from only one year earlier. Look at the painting (in the link below) and look at the nymph to the far left.

Doesn't she look exactly the same as the Venus in "The Birth of Venus"? Does anybody have more information on this?--Psa- 11:35, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, they do look remarkably similar. The poses and body shape are almost identical, but some features are slightly different; the nymph in The Nymphaeum is just slightly thinner, and her face is a little different, probably a result from being cast in shadow. Perhaps the artist liked the figure so much that he decided to use the same model, or else a very similar one, in the same pose for another painting, this time highlighting her. I did find some information on it, and I will be adding it to the article. Lt. Waaxe 22:03, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

IP edit about Marie Georgine of Ligne?

An IP recently added information about the model for Venus; a Marie Georgine, the princess of Ligne. I cleaned it up a bit, and it is good info and doesn't seem to be false, but some verification is needed. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks, Lt. Waaxe (talk) 01:17, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Good point. I actually placed a tag and set myself a reminder. Since this info hasn't been fact-checked for so many years, I'll leave the tag here for a week, and if nothing changes, I'll remove that info and re-arrange the paragraph.
