Please Restore The Synopsis[edit]

Not sure why my cleanup to the Synopsis was so quickly undone. Some of this stuff shouldn't be controversial, at least not to anyone who's read the book. This book does not tell how Tom became consigliere, so I'm confused why Gareth insists on putting that back in. When the story ends, Genco is the consigliere, and Tom is in college and has no part in the family business. There is some backstory about Tom, but nothing at all about how he becomes consigliere. Similarly, why erase any mention of any of the Irish characters, who collectively are a huge part of the story? I'm not trying to be a prima donna here, but these changes don't make sense.Lafong (talk) 04:43, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have amended Hagan's reference in the synopsis—please see my edit summary, and I hope accept my apology—I do have a problem with "... Irish gangsters and their families ..."
Please replace, but with specific examples— giving names and relevance to the story. Cheers!

I have no quarrel with you or any of those wikipedia editors, that you hold in your pocket like so many nickels and dimes. "Prequel" designation and a name change[edit]

Is it really accurate to label this novel a “prequel” to The Godfather in light of the fact that it is an elaboration of Book III of the original novel? In regard to contradictions (or elaborations in the movie not contained in the original novel) between the movie The Godfather, Part II and the novel, Falco generally follows the movie’s version of events. The point is to ask that since this time period is contained within the novel, is Falco’s elaboration technically a prequel?

Also, though not really to the point, Falco makes some outright changes to both the novel and the movie. For example, nothing is mentioned in either about Hagen’s father being killed by Corleone for nonpayment of gambling debts, let alone Sonny witnessing it. (In the novel, Hagen’s father dies from drinking and there is no mention that Corleone even knew the Hagens before Sonny brought Tom home demanding refuge for the orphaned boy.) In both the movie and the novel, Sonny witnesses his father’s murder of Fanucci.

Finally, it is stated in the article that new characters are introduced such as Giuseppe Mariposa. However, in this instance this is simply a name change that Falco made for a reason I can only guess at. In both the original novel and the movie, this character is named Maranzano.

(Puzo used some real names of deceased kingpins from the criminal underworld in The Godfather. This character is, ironically, a thinly-veiled representation of Giuseppe (“Joe the Boss”) Masseria. It’s ironic because Puzo either intentionally or in error substituted the name of Masseria's archenemy Salvatore Maranzano who, after a bloody Mafia war, had Masseria killed in the exact same manner that Puzo’s character is in his novel. I’m guessing that Falco, wanting to avoid confusion, simply changed the name of the character altogether in The Family Corleone, though alluding to Masseria by using his real first name.)

Unless anyone objects within a week, I intend to at least eliminate the assertion that Giuseppe Mariposa is a new character and note that it is simply a name change from the novel and movie.
