Merge, merge! Isopropyl 07:08, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Don't merge. The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston is an important landmark of this city and deserves its own article, not just a section of the article about the Church of Christ, Scientist in general. --Mihai 20:14, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Don't merge as per Mihai above. Technically, however, this should probably be redirected to Christian Science Center (rather than the other way around as it is now) as the First Church of Christ, Scientist is only the oldest building on the site. Digitalican 18:22, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Do not merge; Rename

  • Absolutely, no question, do not merge this article with the article "Church of Christ, Scientist". The later is a religious denomination; this article is about a Boston landmark and tourist attraction visited by countless people each year, most of whom have no knowledge or interest in Christian Science. However, I think the article should be called either Christian Science Center (the common name) or Christian Science Plaza (the official name for the whole place including the reflecting pool, the Mapparium, etc.) If I see no objections, I will rename the article on Dec 14, 2006. Thanks to all interested parties. HouseOfScandal 23:48, 10 December 2006
  • There are a number of other historic churches of this denomination throughout the country with this name. Perhaps this should be renamed "First Church of Christ, Scientist (Boston)". Just look at the "What links here" for this article to see what I mean. It needn't be changed at all in the article's text, just moved to the new name. This is on our list (the NHRP project, that is) to make a disambiguation page for anyway, due to how many of these there are (not to mention "Second Church", etc.) -Ebyabe 00:47, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
  • Technically, the "The First Church of Christ, Scientist" is reserved for the Boston Church, all others referred to as simply "First Church of Christ, Scientist Anywhere (where anywhere is the particular location.) This is according to the Church Manual. Your previous redirections are really incorrect in this respect. Digitalican 15:06, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

The First Church of Christ, Scientist (Boston)The First Church of Christ, ScientistThe First Church of Christ, Scientist and First Church of Christ, Scientist both already redirect to this article, and as First Church of Christ, Scientist (disambiguation) explains, this is the only church of this name with "The" in front because it's the mother church, therefore the Boston disambiguation is not necessary since "The" already indicates it's the mother church in Boston. — LonelyMarble (talk) 13:25, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's naming conventions.
  • Support as nominator, article titles should be as simple as possible and as I explained above, the Boston disambiguation doesn't seem necessary. Plus the article title I think it should be moved to already redirects to this article anyway. LonelyMarble (talk) 16:46, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Discussion

Any additional comments:
This organization apparently specifically thinks the "The" is important so even if in most situations it's not, it is in this case. "The" can be important in some cases, such as the difference between Cars and The Cars off the top of my head. I'm not really sure what you are asking for, the manual says it's the "legal title", does it really matter if it's legally binding in reality? The main reason this move makes sense to me is that for someone that knows a lot about this church it seems they would know that having "The" in front of "First Church of Christ, Scientist" and then adding (Boston) at the end too is redundant, because "The" already indicates it's in Boston. I agree that the majority of readers won't know this difference but that can be cleared up in the hatnote instead of the actual article title, which I think is probably a better solution. Hi Beyond My Ken, I'd like to change the image again to show both church buildings. As you don't like the one I added, I don't mind looking for another, but it would be nice to use one that shows the original too. Sarah (talk) 15:20, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

I've added a different one (top right), though I prefer the earlier one (bottom right). The latter is higher resolution and includes both churches, the reflecting pool and colonnade building. I like the reflection of the churches in the water, and the blue of the water and sky. Sarah (talk) 17:05, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
@SlimVirgin: Sarah: The problem I have is that in the space we have available to display a lede image, I don't thing either of the reflecting pool pictures do a good job of identifying the subject of the article to the reader - which is, of course, a different question altogther from their value as images per se (I like the reflections as well). What would you think of the cropped version of your original choice (on the left), which shows both the old and new churches, as well as part of the colonnade building and the reflecting pool? BMK (talk) 15:52, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
@Beyond My Ken:, that's fine with me. I tried it on preview and it looks good. Thanks for creating it. Sarah (talk) 22:57, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
@SlimVirgin: No problem, glad it works for you. BMK (talk) 05:08, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Name

Jgefd, if you'd like to move this, please open an WP:RM discussion. "The" is part of the name, as the article (as I recall) explains. SarahSV (talk) 15:04, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
