preservation[edit]

How can someone who hears the song in 1963 be considered for 'preserving'it when it had been in print as a Child Ballad since the 19th century? Perhaps "popularising" or "bringing to a wider public attention" would be more accurate. (79.190.69.142 (talk) 21:48, 23 March 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Actually I think that reads wrongly, since arguably Christy Moore and Planxty were actually responsible for the popularising, via their recordings and performances :) so I have now changed it to read: "The Irish song collector Tom Munnelly was instrumental in popularising the song"... General expansion[edit]

I have done as much background reading about this song as I can for now and there is a lot more information available than that present in previous versions of this article, so I have done a bit of general expansion e.g. to the lede and most other portions (for example when I looked for it in the transcriptions of Percy I could not find it under Child's title, but eventually found it under a completely different and nonsensical one, namely "Lillumwham"); also as well as John Reilly's Irish version, several others have also now been found in Ireland; and a complete nineteenth century text has also been discovered under the title "The Maid of Coldingham", published in 1994 and then 2007, not referenced in the original article (plus a lot more). Also discussion of the Continental connection, especially Finnish studies... Also heavily expanded (and corrected) the external links. New 1955 text[edit]

I have discovered that a new text of the "Well Below The Valley" variant exists, collected in 1955, referenced by O'Connor, 1991 (overlooked by both Munnelly and Bronson), and made an appropriate addition to the "survival and publication history" section. At present I have only seen it in "Google snippet" view (e.g. https://books.google.com.au/books?redir_esc=y&id=ThjXAAAAMAAJ&focus=searchwithinvolume&q=drink , p. 120) but have put out feelers to locate the full work...
