Was the Mexican War, U.S. Army transport, "Gen. Hamer" out of New Orleans, named for this Gen. Thomas L. Hamer? My ancestor, Robert Wm. James (born Wilmington, N.C., 1811, died Biloxi) was the civilian Master of the "Gen. Hamer" out of N.O.. What did the "Gen. Hamer" do in the Mexican War?
