[edit]Torne träsk is the seventh largest lake in Sweden. It isn't a swamp, it is a glacial lake. "Träsk" doesn't mean swamp - not in this part of Sweden. It means lake. There are many lakes in this part of Sweden that has "träsk" in their names. / Habj 02:31, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
- I moved it to Torneträsk. The name must be either "Torne Träsk" or "Torneträsk". "Torneträsk" seems most common, e.g. here. // Fred-Chess 10:11, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
- More common maybe, but wrong... due to the ignorance of people from Southerns Sweden? ;-) pretty much like the common practise of writing "Luleälven" instead of "Lule älv". Apparantly NE writes Torneträsk also. In an English-speaking context, I find little arguments to raise though (different from the Swedish-speaking situation). / Habj 13:23, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
- This should perhaps be noted: CATALOGING POLICY AND SUPPORT OFFICE, LIBRARY OF CONGRESS SUBJECT HEADINGS
- (C) 151 Tornetrask (Sweden) [sp2004001127]
- 451 UF Lake Tornetrask (Sweden)
- 451 UF Torne Lake (Sweden)
- 451 UF Tornetrask Lake (Sweden)
- Just to show there are some variations. I think the problem is that "sjö" in standard Swedish translates to "lake", but that "träsk" in standard Swedish translates to "swamp" and that Torne Träsk can't be translated to Torne Swamp (as you noted)...
- Otherwise I prefer to translate the Swedish word, as e.g. Lule River. Except, when it comes to the "åar", it seems counter-intuitive to translate to something e.g. Helgeå = Helge River...? Helgeån is not a river, so all those articles would have to start with "X River" is a stream in Sweden, it is not actually a river... Other options would include "Helge Creek"...? "Helge Stream"...?, but that would be to invent names....
