Appropriate encyclopedia entry?[edit]

Karnataka tourism is an interesting article, but it seems wholly inappropriate for wikipedia, which is an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is not a tourist guide, so it's not really appropriate to use the same sort of voice or topic. You might want to try submitting that material at Wikitravel, or rewriting it to be more in line with our content policies and style guide. I'd especially recommend that you read up on WP:NPOV, along with the No original research policy, which prohibits inserting opinions (your own or others) into articles as fact. You mean you dont like the tone of the article (I can edit to remove original research and unsupported claims) or you think tourism article should not be an encyclopedia entry? Leotolstoy 18:50, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If it's going to take the form of a tourist guide, it doesn't belong in wikipedia. I'm not sure how you could restructure this. List of landmarks? Normally this sort of stuff would get broken out. Places to visit go in geography or history or culture, same with other activities and attractions, and so on. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 19:00, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the articles in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Tourism_in_India are of this nature. Either point me to a tourism related article which is apt for encyclopedia (so that I can restructure this article to that tone) or delete all the articles in that category. Leotolstoy 19:04, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, most of them aren't. They all seem to be about places that are tourist destinations in themselves, rather than specialized articles that present tourist guides. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 19:19, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nelliampathi definitely needs work though, it's pretty atrocious in tone. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 19:21, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I will restructure it then. I will try to make it a general article which links to particular tourist places. It might take some time though. So please be patient.Leotolstoy 19:31, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't eliminate this page or move it to the travel page. It has some historical content although I do agree that some of it may belong on the travel page. I would like to see the parts about architecture and ancient sculpure preserved assuming it is acurate. The Statue of Jain Saint Gomateswara is of particular interest. This statue is as tall as the Colossi of Memnon. It is not as deep or as heavy but it probably still weighs 3-6 hundred tons and must have been extremely difficult to move. This was erected over 1,000 years ago with primitave technology. If you know more about it and can site sources please do so. I have found several sources on the web and in the library. The web sources are:

http://www.kamat.com/kalranga/jain/monu.htm http://www.tribuneindia.com/2000/20000326/spectrum/main5.htm

They all agree that the statue is 17 meters tall not 13 as was recorded on your article. I corrected it since I had several sources that agreed. I initionaly assumed that the 26 feet estimated width of the sholders is way off based on the proportions shown in the picture after looking at a clearer picture I still believe it is an over estimate but that it may be close. The shoulders are probably between 23 and 26 feet wide. The Base seems to be about 33 feet wide. After making some rough estimates of the dimensions I'm estimating it is about 200 cubic meters. If it is average density of a typical stone it would be about 2.5 tons per cubic meter. That would be about 500 tons. this estimate has a large margin of error since it is based on rough guesses and incomplete dimensions. This is one of the greatest wonders of the ancient world. Only a few of the Egyptian statues are larger than this. Any information about how far they transported it, what type of rock it is carved out of or more specific dimensions will be welcome. My initial asumption was that it was carved in place but that doesn't seem to be the case acording to some of the text. There are some reference to it being erected and it seems highly unlikely that it would have been standing up naturaly on the top of a hill. There are also reference to the steps being carved out of the rock. This implies that there may be a lot of rock on the hill therefore it could have been close but it still would have been tough to erect. Like the Trilithon stones it may have been moved up hill. Some of this is speculation so if anyone can confirm or refute it please do so. This is one of a dozen or so sites that moved colossal stones 100 to 1,000 tons in the ancient world. Copyright concerns[edit]

This article was heavily edited in 2008 by IP 203.143.176.253, whose pattern of copy-pasting content is well documented by now at North Karnataka. It needs to be thoroughly evaluated to make sure that it is not as tainted as that article was. That article has lost much of its content over this. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:34, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Linkfarm[edit]

I am guessing that many items in the external links section are spam due to the names. I am having trouble accessing them, probably because of my ISP. Pls check and prune the list. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:36, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page[edit]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.

Below is a list of links that were found on the main page:
