Buildings?[edit]

I think maybe you should specify the different buildings within the college, perhaps giving a detailed explaination of what each building offers students.

Buildings[edit]

Fair enough, I can do that...

Truro college is comprised of nine main buildings over a site of about a quarter of a mile across. The buildings are named for rivers in the county of Cornwall.

The earliest building on campus is Mylor, which is mostly given over to the sciences, art and some music facilities. This is also where the main college reception can be found, as well as the college shop, transport office and MIS offices.

Tresillian is adjoined to Mylor by a glass corridor, but is technically a seperate building; electronics, engineering, humanities such as geography and history are housed here, along with newer subjects such as silver-smithing. Tresillian also houses a large open access computer facility and a study support centre.

Near the front of Mylor is Calenick, wherein hair and beauty courses are run with purpose built salons. Training kitchens are also found within this building and the old sports hall adjoins it on one side.

The next building to be finished was Kenwyn, a large, striking building looking rather like a complex house of cards, sporting an iconinc blue faced clock on a short tower, often seen on the college's advertising literature. Kenwyn houses Maths and Computing, Media and Photography; it also houses the largest of the college libraries and open access computer suites. All buildings on campus boast excellent computing facilities, but none more so than Kenwyn.

Next to Kenwyn is Helford, a large, triangular building which houses languages, English and music facilities. This is also where the Helford Theatre is to be found, which regularly stages commercial and student productions.

Behind Helford is the Percuil building, a small facility given over to business studies with its own dedicated library and computing suite.

Completed three years ago, the Allen building can be found opposite the bus parking area, central to the layout ofthe campus. The design of this building is somewhat reminiscent of a ship, with large round windows and a round tower central to the roof, presenting the appearance of a funnel. This building houses a number of general purpose teaching rooms and a small library, but is mostly given over to the administrative functions of the college. Student Services, the Attendance office, Finance, Payroll and the Principles office can all be found here.

More recently, two new large buildings have been completed; Lynher is a very large sports facility, housing an indoor sports area, many teaching rooms, computing facilities, gymnasium and fitness suite and a library focussed on sports and physiology. This building has recently had to have its translucent roof protected from the seagulls by a netting mesh, as the gulls couldn't resist poking holes through the plastic cover!

Next to Lynher is the Fal building, a facility dedicated to Higher Education. Truro College is predominantly an FE establishment, but offers an increasing number of HE courses. Fal houses a number of teaching rooms, computing facilities, a very large library and the largest canteen on campus. The design of this building is extremely striking, although the large, open spaces within the building have resulted in smaller teaching rooms than can be found elsewhere in the college.

As well as these primary buildings, there is a subterranean recording studio facility behind Fal called the Red building and a number of satellite sites, most notably Haven House in Truro and Tregye, near Carnon Downs. Haven House is an open access, primarily adult education facility which is gradually being run down in favour of the expanding hair and beauty department. Tregye is primarily given over sports sciences and offers limited accomodation to some students.

Hope that helps,

Smoking[edit]

Is the section on Smoking really suitable for an encyclopedia? It reads like an internal notice. It is also unsourced. Could it be removed or at least re-phrased simply to say that Truro College is a non-smoking college? Stormac (talk) 00:33, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
