I understood that the reason for the closure of Northampton's original university was to do with support for Simon de Montfort's rebellion, not because of any perceived threat to (the University of?) Oxford. Matthew 17:19, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that the initial call to close the University came from those concerned about the status of Oxford. Due to the town standing against the King, he did not need much encouragement and happily closed the University whilst also declaring that no University should exist in the entire county (I think). When the current University received its status from the Privy Council, they had to convince the Council that this decree should no longer be applied, as the idea of protecting Oxford from competition was not relevant in the modern academic environment. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.168.225.231 (talk) 16:23, 11 December 2006

Reference format[edit]

The first reference added to this article used cite web format. The next six references, added by now-blocked User:D A R C 12345, did not use templates so I propose changing them to citation templates for consistency. TSventon (talk) 23:33, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Additionally the book references don't have page numbers and four of them may have been derived from a fifth reference to a University of Northampton blog.[1]

Royal Decree that banned the establishment of a university in Northampton[edit]

I have added a longer quotation from Henry III's 1265 decree, including "we by the advice of our great men, firmly order that there shall henceforth be no University in our said town, and that you shall not allow any students to remain there otherwise than was customary before the creation of the said University" and removed a citation needed tag. I think a citation is still needed for the claim that the decree had to be repealed by the Privy Council in 2005 to allow the then University College Northampton to gain university status.
