Irrelevant trivia[edit]

A list of recent accidents in the area is of doubtful relevance. There was a discussion of a similar section in the article on Hagley where the decision was to remove it. In any case, no reference was given for the section's main claim, namely that the bad state of the road was the cause of the accidents. In fact there is a two-laned motorway down the gorge.

The list of literary references was similarly trivial and without any references. There must have been hundreds of mentions of such a famous spot over the centuries and an uninterpreted list of them is not encyclopedic. This is the conclusion of WP:HTRIV. The Tempi train crash is a notable event and not an "irrelevant trivia", because it became the deadliest train accident of Greece. That is why it should be added in the history section of the article, which is not long anyway. I am also not in favor of adding every accident or other event, which have no Wikipedia articles, in this article either, but this event is notable because of its fatality record in Greece (and the subsequent backlash it has caused), which occurred in this valley. Thanks for bringing up the matter here. I have two comments: first that the subsequent political backlash may establish the event's notoriety but is decidedly WP:OFFTOPIC for an article on a geographical area; second, that news reports site the accident as happening at the motorway underpass before the Tempe gorge. I'm uncertain whether the expression "Vale of Tempe" is limited to the gorge or also covers the river valley beyond it on that side of the mountains. However, in view of the fact that there is already a substantial article on this news item, I'll propose a compromise instead. I suggest that we move down information on modern-day routes through the gorge (which don't belong in the lead anyway) to the end and rephrase it so as to direct readers to the fuller article elsewhere. This might then read "The modern-day A1 motorway and the National Road 1 pass through the Vale of Tempe, as well as the Athens–Thessaloniki railway line, site of what was reported as Greece's deadliest rail disaster on 28 February 2023." Can we agree on this? Sweetpool50 (talk) 19:53, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, just adding this accident with a simple wikilink without the details, is just fine. Multituberculata (talk) 21:29, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad that we've agreed on that Multituberculata and can establish consensus when others try - as an editor did only recently - to reinstate the traffic accident trivia deleted in 2018. Sweetpool50 (talk) 01:10, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
