Some Wikipedias give 19 October as his death date. Need reference for this!--Morel (talk) 13:42, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

5th paragraph doesn't make sense

The fifth paragraph, which begins, "Jaeger was the editor of..." does not make sense to me. There are several parts of the sentence that do not make sense. Could someone who knows about Werner Jaeger's work read this paragraph? If it is correct, I would like to know how Jaeger could be the editor of a person. If it is not correct, perhaps someone could work on it.CorinneSD (talk) 21:55, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Interpretation of Plato and Aristotle

To Bill Moyers: This is in response to your re-adding the new section you created, headed "Interpretation of Plato and Aristotle". Ah, where do I begin?

1) The articles in Wikepedia are supposed to be written in such a way that the average educated reader can understand them. This paragraph is written in such a way that only an expert in the field of philosophy can understand it.

2) This article is about Werner Jaeger. You get too far away from Werner Jaeger and his ideas and works in this paragraph. You don't even explain why it is important to understand "Jaeger's position concerning the history of the interpretation of Plato and Aristotle".

3) The paragraph is not well-written:

• You have the phrase "the history of the interpretation of Plato and Aristotle" in the first sentence and you repeat it in the second sentence;

• The second sentence is wordy, and the plethora of words makes it unclear: "The history of the interpretation of Plato and Aristotle has largely followed the outline of those who subscribe to the position that..." (and what's an outline?);

• "you use the word "position", but then you give three positions: "(a)...., (b)....., and (c)...." Before you removed "or not" from the end of (a) and (b), you had five positions: "(a).... or not, (b)...or not, and (c)". (And what does "....or not" mean?);

• Who are "those who subscribe to (a)....., (b)....., and (c)....."? Shouldn't it read, "those who subscribe to one of three positions: (a)......, (b)......, or (c)....."?

• What does this mean: "For Cherniss's reading of Jaeger, Cherniss stated that...."??;

• You give a German phrase without giving its English equivalent for those readers who do not know German;

• You bring in another person (scholar?), Leisegang, without explaining who he is, or was, and what his relationship to Jaeger, if any, was;

• your last sentence is poorly written. "...Cherniss believed Jaeger to be contrary to Leisegang" – contrary in what way? Personally? Philosophically? Or do you mean "Jaeger's ideas", or "Jaeger's understanding of Plato and Aristotle"? You need to be precise. Also, who believed that "Leisegang was unsympathetic to...." Cherniss? If it's Cherniss, you've got to add "that" after "and": "Cherniss believed Jaeger to be contrary to Leisegang and that Leisegang was...."

• regarding "compatibility between Plato and Aristotle in both (a) and (b) above." This is not a science article. You can't just write "in both (a) and (b) above". If you want to refer to facts and ideas already mentioned, you've got to be very clear and refer specifically to them using words.

These comments regarding my earlier edit summary "poorly written" are in reply to your request to discuss on the Talk page of the article. The most important comment is the first one, above, that articles on WP are to be written in a style that is comprehensible to the average reader, which your paragraph is not.
