meaning of name
[edit]I have been there a few days ago, and even the meaning is probably wrong. if anyone did read the actual sign like me they know on the sign it said that Whitnourwhatnourgate means, What A Street!. and not whats in there! please edit this
- I live here, and I believe (will have to see if I can find a source) that that has been discredited since the sign was put up. Brickie (talk) 08:04, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- To me the simplest explanation is the likeliest, is that this is where they used to whip and whop the felons. Plus someone recently who likely did not like the idea of whipping. But why "-gate" = "street"? Was Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate once a genuine street between two rows of houses, and the houses on its east side were removed to enlarge the adjacent square? See this Google Earth view. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 09:07, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
A 'brief' street
[edit]This doesn't read right to me - 'brief' refers to time not length. SaffyMiso (talk) 15:36, 10 November 2021 (UTC)
- Have to agree that it does not read right. May be just use "short", though may be "shortest" in the same sentence would cause a problem. Keith D (talk) 23:33, 12 November 2021 (UTC)
- I was bold and changed it — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 18:36, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
