Telekom Innovation Laboratories (also called T-Labs) was established in 2004 as the central research and development institute of Deutsche Telekom. The mission of T-Labs is to develop innovative products and solutions while working in close cooperation with science and industry, in addition to promoting the integration of innovations in the Deutsche Telekom Group. With sites in Berlin, Darmstadt and Bonn in Germany, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev at Be'er Sheva (Israel) and Mountain View, California (U.S.), T-Labs' focus is on medium-term projects and founding new businesses.

Organization and fields of research

T-Labs is a unit of Products & Innovation within the Deutsche Telekom organization and conducts projects for all areas in the Deutsche Telekom Group. At the same time, T-Labs is also a so-called affiliated institute of Berlin Institute of Technology (TU Berlin), meaning that T-Labs is a privately organized entity that is closely integrated in the teaching and research activities conducted at TU Berlin. This concept promotes intensive collaboration between research and industry. Experts, entrepreneurs and researchers work together on innovations intended for real-world application scenarios and on disruptive technologies in the area of information and communications technology. The fields of research at TU Berlin include Internet Network Architectures,[1] Quality and Usability,[2] Security in Telecommunications,[3] as well as Service-centric Networking.[4] In 2008, a assistant professorship was established at TU Berlin which was held by Gesche Joost, who was appointed in 2010 to a full professorship in Design Research[5] at Berlin University of the Arts. In 2009, two additional professorships – for Assessment of IP-based Applications[6] and Autonomous Security – were established at TU Berlin. T-Labs adheres to the principles of Open Innovation and, in addition to TU Berlin, also cooperates with other universities, for example, Israel's Ben Gurion University of the Negev and Stanford University in the United States, not to mention the alliances maintained with industry partners and start-ups. Some 180 Telekom experts and 180 researchers, interns, students, degree candidates, doctoral students and visiting research scholars from more than 25 different countries work at T-Labs. The work environment in the Telefunken Building of TU Berlin consists of an open-office landscape with desk sharing, think tanks, project rooms, cafeteria and numerous conference rooms. Success stories are: First place to implement the microkernel technology, first FlowVisor for SDN, a world record in 2012: 512 Gbit /s fixed line data transfer and the largest field trial for beacons in 2014
