Usage[edit]

Syntax
Code {{Eigo|Kanji|furi=Furigana|Rōmaji|English|extra|y?=any value}}
Gives Kanji (FuriganaRōmaji?, English) extra
Code {{Eigo|Kanji}}
Gives Kanji

This template marks the Kanji segment as being in Japanese Kanji, which helps web browsers display it correctly. It also applies it the t_nihongo_kanji CSS style class.

The optional y?= parameter gives the option of turning on the Japanese language character sets installation help, shown as a link of a superscript question mark: ? . This superscript question mark help link is not shown by default in this template’s output because most computers nowadays can automatically properly display Japanese characters (when this template was first written that was not so common) and because this template primarily outputs the kanji, so is used in places in articles on Japanese subjects where Japanese characters would already have been relatively commonly used via other templates, such as the {{Nihongo}} template used in the opening line for Japanese articles to introduce the Japanese original text of the name of the article. The {{Nihongo}} template (& {{Nihongo3}}) has the superscript question mark help link on by default, therefore the reader would always have already had the opportunity to use the superscript question mark help link from those first occurrences of it, if their display was not rendering Japanese character sets.

Examples[edit]

Code {{Eigo|翼手|yokushu|lit. wing hand}}
Gives 翼手 (yokushu, lit. wing hand)

A name with furi:

Code {{Eigo|葉月|furi=はづき|Hazuki}}
Gives 葉月 (はづきHazuki)

A sentence with furi and y?=1 giving a superscript question mark: ?, a link to Japanese character set help:

Code The word chimera was written with the characters {{Eigo|死美獣|furi=キメラ|kimera||meaning "deadly beautiful beast"|y?=1}}.
Gives The word chimera was written with the characters 死美獣 (キメラkimera?) meaning "deadly beautiful beast".
