Template:List of Historic Buildings in Carmel-by-the-Sea[edit]
Greg, you created this template and you created almost all of the articles about the buildings on this template. You have then added the names of the designers and architects and, I assume, gone and added this template to every one of those articles. I have just removed it from Frank Lloyd Wright and David Starr Jordan because I believe this is inappropriate. In particular, there is nothing in the article on Wright that even mentions Carmel and if every town where he was associated with a building had such a template the article would be overwhelmed with this trivia. Can you explain why you think it is appropriate to have a template linking to all those articles on buildings in one particular little town? And why did you think the template was necessary when you had also already created List of Historic Buildings in Carmel-by-the-Sea? I would suggest there are other articles where it might be removed, and again perhaps that is a job you could take on as part of clean-up rather than other editors needing to do it. - The purpose of a template H:TQG is to easily navigate to the buildings, architects, and builders when on an article page. My understanding is that templates are OK, and can be placed at the bottom of appropriate pages that list the building/builder/architect. See an example here: Template:Underwater work. The architect Frank Lloyd Wright built the Mrs. Clinton Walker House in Carmel. See his template here: Template:Frank Lloyd Wright. The professor David Starr Jordan has a house in Carmel too. - Re the purpose of a template, its obvious why someone reading about Frank Lloyd Wright might want to easily navigate to articles about buildings designed by him. The question is why on earth someone reading about him would want to navigate to articles about a whole bunch of unrelated buildings that just happen to be in the same town as a building he designed. The one building Wright designed in Carmel is on the template related specifically to him and thus that template is appropriate in that article. Adding your template with all the buildings in Carmel is a whole different thing. One might question whether the purpose was to boost links to all these articles by putting them on a much more popular and high traffic article. Melcous (talk) 05:14, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
- You make a fair point. I will avoid using the template on articles unless the building/architect/builder has related articles in the Carmel area. - Greghenderson2006, as well as noting the problems with how this template is being used, I would question whether it is necessary at all. - The need for this template is allow users to easily navigate to the different buildings without having to click on the List of Historic Buildings in Carmel-by-the-Sea or Category in order to find the building. Clicking on the building in the template saves them valuable time as reduces the number of click-throughs to find what they want.
